In my first year of civil engineering, a lecturer said something I have never forgotten: "The building is only as good as what you cannot see." He was talking about foundations, the concrete and steel buried in the ground that nobody admires.
Years later, standing in a pulpit instead of on a construction site, I realised Jesus said it first.
"Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock." (Matthew 7:24)
The storm tests the foundation
Both houses in Jesus' parable faced the same storm. The rain fell and the winds blew on both. The difference wasn't the weather. It was what lay beneath.
Many young people are building impressive lives above ground: degrees, followers, careers. But the question every storm will eventually ask is simple: what are you standing on?
Three things to check
- Depth. Is your faith something you've dug into yourself, or is it borrowed from your parents and your church?
- Material. Are you building on the Word, or on opinions, trends and feelings?
- Practice. Jesus said the wise builder hears and does. Knowing isn't enough.
Build deep. Build on the Rock. The storm is coming either way.
